The new championship that FIFA plans for the 24 most powerful teams will worsen the division between rich and poor clubs, says Alex Webb in Bloomberg and explains why. The income inequality between the clubs is easily seen when looking at the final result of the big tournaments, especially the European ones. FIFA seems to be on the verge of creating an oligopoly that could destroy club football around the world. Two years after assuming the presidency of the sport's global governing body, Gianni Infantino seeks to create a new competition that allows the best clubs in the world to compete for a prize of US$1.9 billion. According to Webb, “there is a risk of widening the wealth gap between the biggest and smallest clubs in the world, much more than what has happened as a trend in recent years, where only a few clubs have a real chance of win a title.
