owner Ed Snider has been there from the beginning. The longevity is impre sive, but his long run with the club also means that hes as aware as anyone else of the 40 years since the last Stanley Cup in Philadelphia. With the way things went in Philly this season, that Stanley Cup must feel an even farther away.Theres obviously some retooling that needs to happen for the Flyers to get back to being a playoff contender and even more if they want to enter the conversation as a Stanley Cup threat. They could potentially become a playoff team, but looking at the way the current Flyers were built does not suggest an easy fix here.The defense needs ma sive retooling, especially with and Braydon Coburn gone. Theres nearly $21 million in cap space being eaten up for next season by a defense that quite clearly is not Stanley Cup caliber. And thats without the extension has appeared to earn with his performance this season.Unle s the team thinks prospects like Samuel Morin or Shayne Gostisbehere can come in and be contributors right away on the blue line  big ones  theres a lot of work to be done for Snider to get his way.  Some of the likely changes to come this offseason would appear to include the dismi sal of head coach Craig Berube. Its looking like hes on borrowed time now, but a change behind the bench will only take a team so far.Snider has a good point, though. The core of this team is quite good. and are bona fide offensive stars in the league. is one of the best bargains in the NHL and s resurgence provides some strength in net. This is not a team that requires a Sabres-level teardown Roquan Smith Jersey , but beyond those aforementioned players, the Flyers simply dont have the depth to compete with other top teams and thats going to take a lot more than a summer to fix.Its not difficult to understand Sniders urgency. Hes never been afraid to spend the money and hes watched team after team raise the Stanley Cup, including the Chicago Blackhawks in his own building in 2010. But in a salary cap league, patience is often rewarded and if the owner doesnt have it, the organization starts making poor decisions.  The Flyers problems in 2014-15 are tied to years of mismanaging the salary cap  mostly under Paul Holmgrens watch -- with overspending for what they end up getting. The Ilya Bryzgalov contract blew up in their faces when a future Vezina Trophy winner was right under their noses already in the since-traded . Bringing in an aging at a $4.5 million cap hit ($6 million in actual salary this year) is almost hard to believe in retrospect. s six-year extension signed just last season has had very minimal immediate returns.These are problems that dont get a Band-aid put over them. Can the Flyers make it to the playoffs next season with the group they have? Its definitely po sible. Who would have seen the Calgary Flames or Ottawa Senators doing what theyre doing this year?Heck, the Flyers could conceivably win the Draft lottery and Eddie Goldman Jersey  end up with Connor McDavid for all we know (not that that would launch a thousand conspiracy theories or anything).  But if Snider truly craves a Stanley Cup, its going to require patience, patience that he appears unwilling to exercise.
